Your Go-to Weekly House Cleaning Schedule

weekly house cleaning schedule

Busy families like yours find their lives dictated by a variety of different schedules. Work schedules, school schedules, extracurricular activity schedules. When you’re finally home, it’s tempting to throw away the schedules and take care of your chores willy-nilly. However, this isn’t the most productive way to tackle your household responsibilities. Yes, you need one more schedule in your life— a weekly house cleaning schedule.

This doesn’t have to be a rigorous cleaning regimen. But scheduling a block of time to tackle specific tasks each day will ensure the right chores get done at the right times and help everything in your household run smoothly. No more last minute, “Hey, I don’t have any clean socks,” or “Ew, when was the last time someone cleaned the toilet?”

With a weekly cleaning schedule, you’ll know things will be clean when they need to be and nothing gets overlooked.

How do I make my weekly house cleaning schedule?

The best part of a weekly house cleaning schedule is you get to make it yourself! No one else is telling you what time you have to do something. This schedule is all about you and your family’s needs. You get to pick the chores you want done, when to do them, and how much time you’re willing to spend on each. Better yet, you can always tweak your schedule if you find that something isn’t working! Your cleaning schedule is your own customizable plan for a clean, functioning household.

So how do you create this weekly cleaning schedule?  Here are three easy steps to get you started!

Step #1: Make a chore list

Your first step is to make a list of chores that need to be done each week. It might help you to make an individual chore list for each room in your house so don’t neglect anything important. It might even help to walk to each room as you make your lists, just to envision the space clearly in your mind.

You can also look up lists of suggested chores online, like our weekly house cleaning template below. There are lots of weekly house cleaning schedules and checklists on the internet to give you ideas of what to put on your weekly chore list while you craft one specifically for your family.

As you compile your chore list, remember this is a weekly cleaning schedule. This isn’t a list of one-time home projects you’ve been meaning to do or tasks that only need to be done monthly or annually. If you prefer, you can keep a separate running list of these occasional or one-time chores and pick one or two each week to do.

Now, look at your lists. If there are common chores, like washing windows or vacuuming carpets, you can consider those one chore and plan on doing those tasks throughout the whole house at once. Other chores might be similar, but should be kept separate, like wiping down bathroom surfaces and kitchen surfaces.

#2: Schedule your chores

Just as the chores you pick for your house cleaning schedule will differ from other families’, so too will the times you pick to do each chore. You should think about what needs to be clean when to best suit your family’s needs. For instance, you might want to do heavy cleaning later in the week so your house is ready for weekend guests if you do a lot of entertaining, or you might do laundry on weekends to make sure everyone has clean clothes for the week.

You can schedule fewer chores on nights when the kids have extracurricular activities and more chores on nights when the whole family is at home. You may want to assign specific chores to each family member based on their age and schedule. It might be a good idea to create your weekly cleaning schedule together so everyone can pick what they want to do and when.

#3: Keep it easy

Your house cleaning schedule shouldn’t be difficult to follow. Hang a copy (or multiple copies) somewhere everyone can see it so they know what chores they’re responsible for each day. Set time limits to doing chores, and don’t worry if a task doesn’t get completely done. You can finish it next week. Create cleaning supply stations around the house so supplies are in easy reach or try other house cleaning tricks to make the job easy.

How to Make Your House Smell Good (Step by step Guide)

house smell

When you step inside a home, one of the first things you might notice is the smell. When you live inside a home, one of the last things you might notice is the smell. Your sense of smell can be desensitized to odors you are around all the time. You might notice that when you leave your home and come back after a period of time, you suddenly realize something doesn’t smell quite right.

To make sure your home is always smelling good, here is a step-by-step guide to getting rid of odors and ensuring your house always smells welcoming.

Make Your House Smell Good Step #1: Garbage Disposal and Trash Can

So much time is spent in our kitchens, we want to make sure it always smells fresh and appetizing. If you smell something that’s not quite right in your home, the first area to check for bad odors is the kitchen. The garbage disposal and trash can are the usual culprits for foul smells.

A natural way to routinely clean the garbage disposal is with frozen white vinegar and citrus cubes. To make the cubes, cut up a lemon and place the pieces into an ice cube tray. Pour white vinegar in the tray until full, then freeze it. Put the cubes into your garbage disposal and turn it on. This will keep your garbage disposal clean and fresh smelling.

Even with trash can liners, your trash cans should get a good cleaning out every couple of weeks. The bags can leak and bits of food can get stuck in the can or on the bottom of the lid, and this food will start to rot, causing a bad odor.

Make Your House Smell Good Step #2: Open Windows

Opening the windows is a great way to clear any odors out of your house. If you live in an area where the temperature gets cold in the winter, it might even be something you consider doing on a “warm” day mid-winter to freshen up your house.

If you live in a temperate area, pick a cooler day to open up all the windows and air out your home. The fresh air will not only make your home smell good, but it will likely make you feel good as well!

Make Your House Smell Good Step #3: House Plants

Did you know that house plants can give you better air quality inside your home? Aside from releasing oxygen into the air, some houseplants are even really good at fighting bad odors! The Peace Lily is a great air filter and good at controlling odors.

Jasmine and citrus geraniums are great fragrant plants to keep in the house. You can even have fresh herbs on a sunny windowsill if you have the room and they will keep your kitchen smelling delicious!

Make Your House Smell Good Step #4: Essential Oil Diffusers or Wax Warmers

Traditional candles are fantastic, but it’s important to be careful with the types of candles you use. You must ensure that chemicals are not being released into your home. A very natural way to release good scents into the air is essential oil diffusers.

All you need to do is fill a diffuser with water and add a few drops of essential oils, and your house will smell great in no time!  Better yet, it adds humidity to the air which is great for your overall well being.

Wax warmers are an alternative for your favorite scented candles without the open flame. Both wax warmers and diffusers still give off a warm glow and give your house that cozy clean smell you’re looking for.

Make Your House Smell Good Step #5: Simmer Pots

On special occasions when you want your house to be really warm and inviting, consider making a simmer pot. This is a fun solution for holiday parties or even when you’re just spending a rainy Saturday in.

These can be done on the stovetop or in a crockpot. Just add water, citrus, and herbs (basically potpourri in a pot) and simmer on the stove top. The smell permeates your home!

Get Your Holiday Cleaning Done Early

holiday cleaning

The busiest time of the year is upon us. Parties are thrown for holidays throughout  November and December. And it’s not limited to the holiday itself— nearly every weekend, you could have a get together with friends, extended family, and coworkers.

There is a chance you will want to throw one or two of those parties yourself, or maybe you’ll plan to have family stay with you to celebrate the holidays. Getting your holiday cleaning done early will save you from stress and panic before your event!

Read on to learn what you should focus on and why you shouldn’t wait to make sure your holiday cleaning is scheduled!

Who: Everyone Should Do Their Holiday Cleaning Early!

Are you throwing a party for friends, family, or coworkers? Holiday cleaning is for you! Are you having your family over on the day of the holiday? Holiday cleaning is for you! Are you spending quiet, quality time with your immediate family for the holidays? Holiday cleaning is for you!

When your home is clean and organized, you will be much more relaxed. You will be able to focus on spending time with those you love, not worrying about the thing you didn’t get done before your event. You won’t be frantically cleaning a bathroom seconds before your guests walk in the door. You will be able to settle in on the couch and watch that holiday movie with your kids.

Sit down and determine a schedule that will allow you to do the cleaning ahead of time.

When: Do Your Holiday Cleaning At Least A Week Before Your Event

There are many holiday cleaning plans that will help you do a little cleaning every day, leaving you with much less to do right before your event. Rather than scrambling to do all the cleaning in one day, spread out your cleaning. This is an example of a seven day cleaning plan:

Day One: Look over your home and figure out what needs to be cleaned the most, make a list, and hand out chores to everyone in your home.

Day Two: Window cleaning (panes and screens and sills), and window treatment cleaning

Day Three: Deep clean bathrooms and declutter bedrooms

Day Four: Clean closets, wash rugs

Day Five: Deep clean the kitchen

Day Six: Focus on the entryway, including your porch, and dust all surfaces in the home

Day Seven: Do all normal cleaning tasks, including vacuuming, mopping, and bathroom cleaning

A week before your event is a good timeline to clean your home, but you may also consider a deep cleaning before you put up your holiday decorations. Holiday decorations might add a lot to your decor, so cleaning before you put it all up might make your life a little easier when cleaning later on.

Where: Areas to Focus On When Holiday Cleaning

Of course, your home gets cleaned all year long, but there are places that go a little longer without cleaning than others. Guest bedrooms might not have been used in awhile, so don’t forget to put some fresh sheets and dust surfaces in the room. You should check the window treatments for dust and consider washing them.

Your kitchen is a gathering place. People tend to hang out where the food is. Wiping down stove tops, cleaning out microwaves, deep cleaning your refrigerator, wiping down cabinets, and cleaning out the trash can are all great ways to make sure that your kitchen is a clean, odor-free,  and welcoming place for your guests.

Take a close look at your entryway as well, both inside and out. Shake out or clean any mats that may have debris on them. Blow or sweep off your front porch. Wipe down your door and the handles and windows around them. Any furniture that is in your entryway should be dusted and wiped down. If you have an area where shoes are taken off, consider deep cleaning it.
